Dr Hugh Dearnley
Specialities: General medicine and recreational dive medicals.
Dr Dearnley graduated from Sydney University and spent some years working in country towns. He has been in the Tweed area for 23 years.
He enjoys all aspects of General Practice, but has special interests in older people and how they cope with problems of the aging body. Dr Dearnley recognises the problems of stress in everyone’s life, and how to manage it. He also has an interest in Skin Cancers.
He has always been active and currently cycles a lot, including to and from work. He has been unable to persuade his co-workers to join him!
His Maltese dog Lulu loves to go for a walk on the beach with him.
Dr Yu-Hwa Liew
MBBS, Ba Med,
Ba Surg FRACGP
Specialities: General medicine and skin cancer management.
Dr Liew completed her medicine studies in 1989 and has worked in India, Malaysia and Australia. She gained her Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2009 and moved to Australia.
She has a keen interest in the field of Skin Cancer and uses her knowledge and qualifications to perform a wide range of procedures (including skin checks and excisions of Skin Cancers) at the practice. These procedures are bulk billed.
She also has an interest in Diabetes. Dr Liew enjoys working as a Doctor and is very passionate about her patients' health and well being.
Dr Stephen Palin
Specialities: General medicine, travel vaccinations and family medicine.
Having graduated from Liverpool University in 1996, Dr Palin obtained his FRACGP in 2001. Dr Palin started out in Liverpool UK and then Oxford before moving to Australia in 2001. He worked in Gladstone, then Brisbane and lastly settled in the Tweed area in 2001.
Dr Palin currently carries out his General Practice with us and also spends some of his time at John Flynn Hospital as a surgical assistant.
His general interests focus around family, home, keeping active and walking the dog.

Dr David Shaw
MBBS (Syd), FRACGP
Specialities: General medicine, skin cancer management, dermatology, skin cancer management and cosmetic medicine.
Dr David Shaw graduated from University of Sydney in 1997 and has been
practicing medicine in the Tweed area since 2004.
He has a Diploma of Dermatology and his expertise includes Skin Cancer diagnosis and treatment as well as general and Cosmetic Dermatology.
When not working he enjoys surfing and spending time with family and is active in local youth and community work.
Dr Irfan Tariq
Diploma Children’s Health, Diploma Dermatology, Certification in Skin Cancer, Management Certification in Aesthetic Medicine
Specialities: General medicine, dermatology, skin cancer management,
family medicine, cosmetic medicine and paediatrics.
Dr Irfan Tariq has extensive experience in General Practice.
He completed his medical qualifications in Pakistan
and relocated to Australia in the year 2000.
He joined our team at Tweed about 9 years ago.
His other interests include spending time with family and friends,
fishing and bush walking.
Dr Ileana Velcea
Specialities: General medicine.
Dr Velcea studied in Romania and graduated in 1993. After
practicing in Romania she worked in South Africa from
1997-2001 and then moved to Australia.
She obtained her Fellowship to the Royal Australian College
of General Practitioners in 2004. Dr Velcea has been
in the local area since 2004.
She has an interest in all aspects of General Practice,
particularly Women’s Health, Travel vaccination and advice,
Geriatrics, Psychological Issues, Mental Health, Aged Care,
Chronic Disease Management and Preventative medicine.
Dr Theary Thou
Diploma Child Health, Diploma Community Emergency Medicine, Certificate Sport Medicine, Certificate Reproductive and Sexual Health, Certificate in Athlete development.
Specialities: Family medicine, urgent care, sports medicine,
travel medicine and child health.
Dr Theary Thou was born and educated in New Zealand graduating from University of Auckland. He first started to work as a GP in Gold Coast/Tweed area in 2010 after being attracted to the weather and lifestyle.
Whilst working as a GP Dr Thou concurrently completed specialist training in Urgent Care with Royal New Zealand College of Urgent Care, as well as gaining expertise in cosmetic injectables within a cosmetic clinic. He has also worked as a GP in Cambodia, Ireland and NZ.
When Dr Thou is off duty he enjoys spending time with his wife/two young boys and travelling. Being a former National Rep in Football and National Title Holder in Tennis he also enjoys being active playing all kinds of sports.
Dr Margaret Khyentse
Specialities: General medicine.
Dr Khyentse was born in Rockhampton, Queensland and her Air Force family moved to various places in Australia, Scotland and Malaysia.
After a Bachelor of Science, she worked in an Air Force pathology laboratory before completing teacher training and teaching secondary Science in the Northern Rivers. She then coordinated and lectured Bioscience units in the Bachelor of Nursing at Southern Cross University, where she completed a research Master’s degree in Neuroscience.
After 20 years, she studied Medicine at the University of Queensland followed by internship and Mental Health residency at GCUH.
She completed the rest of her residency in Palliative Care, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Rockhampton Base Hospital and Gladstone Hospital and General Medicine and Urology at QEII in Brisbane.
Dr Khyentse began General Practice training at Gundagai Medical Centre where the five GP Registrars also took turns to staff the hospital and Emergency Department during the week and on weekends. Retrievals by road or air to higher levels of care sometimes had to be organised. From Gundagai, she went to West Ballina Medical Centre before moving to The Bright Side Clinic, where she started her Fellowship exams and completed in January 2021.
Dr Khyentse practices evidence-based medicine and has a special interest in Paediatrics. She likes to spend her spare time with her grandchildren and participating in meditation activities.
Dr James Young
Specialities: General medicine
Dr Young graduated from the University of Queensland in 1983. His initial career involved working in regional Queensland in hospital and General Practice settings. He also worked in rural and remote areas.
In 1990 he went to the UK where he worked in Paediatrics [obtaining a Diploma in Child Health] and in General Practice.
On return to Australia he settled into a regional General Practice for 25 years and then most recently spent 2 years in metropolitan Melbourne.
James has extensive experience in all facets of General Practice, with particular interests in chronic disease, paediatrics, mental health and travel/expedition medicine.
He performs skin checks and minor skin procedures.
